Standard ISO 22000 is a globally recognized for food safety management, applicable to all organizations within the food chain. It covers 11 categories, including animal and plant farming, food and feed processing, catering, retail and e-commerce, transport, packaging, equipment manufacturing, and chemical production. 

ISO 22000 integrates the principles of HACCP with the ISO 9001 quality management framework, providing a comprehensive system to identify and manage food safety risks, comply with legal requirements, and build consumer confidence. 

Key requirements of ISO 22000

ISO 22000 is built on four key pillars that together form a flexible management system: 

  • Interactive Communication – between all participants in the food chain, including suppliers, customers, regulatory authorities, and internal teams.
  • Food Safety Management System – based on the PDCA cycle (Plan–Do–Check–Act), ensuring continuous process improvement and risk prevention.
  • Prerequisite Programs (PRPs) – hygienic and operational conditions necessary for a safe environment, including sanitation procedures, pest control, personal hygiene, and product traceability.
  • Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) – identification and assessment of biological, chemical, and physical hazards at each step of the process with the goal of eliminating or minimizing them to an acceptable level.
